The Dutchman went on an expletive rant over his staff radio following the crash, which confirmed he’d slip additional behind runaway McLarens Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the Drivers’ Championship in his bid to win a fifth consecutive title. Verstappen was third in the standings heading into this weekend, and in response to journalist Julianne Cerasoli, the door will now be open for him to get out of his multi-year Red Bull contract, which runs till 2028.

The journalist says that an exit clause will develop into energetic following Sunday’s race. The stipulation is that if Verstappen finds himself outdoors the highest two in the standings on the midway level of the season, he can go away his longtime staff. “We do believe that this race is important for his future, or this period in time,” Cerasoli mentioned.

“At the end of June. At the end of June – the end of the first six months of the year – an exit clause will kick in, releasing him from his Red Bull contract. There was a report saying if he was in the top four, then he couldn’t leave.

“That’s not what I heard. What I’ve stored listening to for the previous couple of months is that it is the high two. At the second, he is in third place, and he would not seem like he will be in the highest two by the top of this weekend. The door appears to be open for him to depart. We do not know if he will. Verstappen has admitted that he is tired of talking about his future at Red Bull in a season of evident frustration. Red Bull appears far off regularly challenging McLaren for race wins, with the Woking-based team winning seven races thus far and looking on course to win in Austria, too.

Mercedes is believed to be keen on signing Verstappen for the 2026 season. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says the speculation annoys the defending champion.

He told Sky F1: “It’s a lot of noise. I feel Max will get fairly aggravated by it and we’re very clear with the contract that now we have with Max till 2028, so something is solely speculative that’s being mentioned. But we have a tendency to not pay an excessive amount of consideration to it.”

It has been speculated that Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen is causing delays in extending George Russell’s contract. Horner says that will be frustrating Russell, too. “I can think about that George is pissed off he hasn’t been given a contract but, however that is between him and his staff,” Horner added.

“But the scenario with Max, we all know clearly the place we’re at and, clearly, as does Max. Everything is subject to noise and, clearly, within any contract, it stays confidential between the events.”

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Mercedes interested in Verstappen. The team wanted him when he was a teenage sensation before his big breakthrough at Toro Rosso in 2015 and Red Bull in 2016.

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team boss, conceded there is a possibility that Verstappen could join. He told Sky F1: “I feel if you have a look at the scenario now we have with Kimi and George, now we have a excellent lineup that we very a lot get pleasure from, that we consider is the longer term.

“But at the same time, there is a four-time World Champion that needs to decide what he’s going to do in the future. And as a team principal, you need to see where that is going.

“But I feel I give it a little or no probability that that is going to occur. I do not know what is going on to [happen] in three or 5 years. That’s why you need to have a look at what needs to be thought-about for the long time period.”
