“The track’s not at fault, the car is not at fault. I made a mistake,” the 34-time race winner said. “I was going for pole, and I just busted loose trying to come to the green with too much speed.

“I mean, the data shows I had too much wheel. I was seven miles per hour quicker coming to the green than I did the previous run, and I was doing everything right in my mind.

“And so when I took that hit, when I backed in, the car then swung around and hit the right front. And I don’t remember the car hitting the right front. I was in outer space. Like everything’s black and white.

“And I got out of the car with adrenaline and got to the care center, and you do all these different tests with the doctor and with the nurses. And there’s this one test called the Kingston test, where you read these numbers.

“It’s on an iPad, and you have to have your baseline done preseason, and I was super slow, but I’m reading it as fast as I can in my mind, and I hear the doctors talking with the nurse this and that. I’m like, ‘This is taking way longer. Normally, I’m cleared by now.’ I couldn’t explain the wreck. That’s part of the protocol as well.”
