Wheeler Dealers star issues ‘too good to be true | Tech News
Mike thought he had sold a Volkswagen Golf GTD but it quickly became clear the buyer was using fake details. The individual who purchased Mike’s car had used a false ID and someone else’s bank card to complete the purchase.
Mr Brewer suggested another individual had also been caught out after trying to buy the VW off the fraudster for a budget price.
Mike added: “That £10,500 car was advertised for just £7,500. No wonder it sold really quickly. As I say, if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.”
Mike eventually had the VW returned to his One Automotive base after the model was tracked down by police. The AA has urged buyers to always “be wary” of models that appear to be a real bargain or come with very low mileage for their age.
Meanwhile, motoring experts at Carwow also urged road users to ensure they are never caught out by dodgy deals when shopping for models online.
They said: “The first thing to keep in mind is that if the car seems too good to be true, it probably is.
“Scammers will usually tempt victims in with a fairly new or desirable car for a very low price, so search around for other examples first to get an idea of what that model usually sells for.”
They added: “If the car you’re looking at is significantly cheaper than the average, and there’s no obvious reason why, such as high mileage, alarm bells should be ringing.”
