High-speed rail in California has turn out to be synonymous with failure, a waste, a racket, a punch line.

So why shovel $3.5 billion more into the project, because the state’s High-Speed Rail Authority did this week?

Short reply: to prop up Gavin Newsom’s presidential dream.

If the governor needed to do proper by California residents, he’d merely abandon the long-stalled project, soak up the sunk price and transfer on.

But that will imply admitting the apparent: He’s led the state down a useless finish.

The info are putting:

Voters in 2008 had been promised a practice that will whisk them between LA and San Francisco in below three hours, for $33 billion.

Eighteen years later, not a single inch of observe has been laid and the project’s estimated price is $231 billion and growing.

That’s a unhealthy search for a two-term governor who aspires to the Oval Office.

So Newsom put in Steve Kawa, a crony, as head of the rail authority. And this week, they pushed via a scheme to plan more, spend more, and maybe put down a few sticks of observe earlier than the “not an inch” marketing campaign advertisements are written for the 2028 presidential election cycle.

It doesn’t matter what occurs from there; they simply need to plausibly declare minor victory, progress or momentum … even when the scheme lingers in limbo for another twenty years.

And that’s the essence of the complete bullet-train project: It’s an opaque, inert, disingenuous racket.

Even Newsom, the conductor of the rail mess, is aware of this.

In his first State of the State deal with, the governor mentioned, ”The present project, as deliberate, would price an excessive amount of and, respectfully, take too long. There’s been too little oversight and never enough transparency.”

But as a substitute of maintaining his pledge to scrap the project, he scaled it back to focus on the Central Valley, apparently below stress from stakeholders — unions, contractors, planners, cronies — to keep the money flowing.

To summarize: Californians are shelling out another $3.5 billion largely to make it simpler for Gavin Newsom to run for president.

It’s a ruse atop a boondoggle.

Here’s a higher thought: The subsequent governor ought to lastly finish the state’s failed rail scheme.

It’s been a punch line long enough.
