We’re beginning to marvel if Mayor Zohran Mamdani has any actual curiosity in selling reasonably priced housing in New York, somewhat than simply posing on the problem: Why else would he ignore the hundreds of public-housing items that sit empty for lack of funds to renovate?

The metropolis Department of Investigation simply recognized 6,740 residences now warehoused as a result of the New York City Housing Authority can’t discover the money to carry them up to code.

The value is barely an estimated $52,000 per unit, far much less than Mamdani needs to spend on different housing plans: The Queens project he’s asking President Donald Trump to fund would value a whole bunch of occasions that per condominium.

Indeed, he may help renovate tens of hundreds of personal items now stored off the market for a lot much less than that pipedream.

But back to NYCHA: The vacant items put different tenants at risk, as drug crews and vagrants seize them for unlawful squats.

Indeed, squatters sit in a whole bunch of these residences, whereas 165,000 law-abiding households languish on NYCHA’s waitlist.

Mr. Mayor: You are the owner to half a million public-housing tenants, with a responsibility to handle their inhumane dwelling situations — rats, dilapidation, lack of heat and sizzling water, toxic mould and lead paint.

Bart Schwartz, the federal monitor overseeing the beleaguered company since 2019, says NYCHA is “fraught with serious problems in structure, culture, and directions, and perhaps even worse.”

Mamdani’s rent freeze and “rental ripoff” hearings (the place NYCHA tenants can’t ask questions!) will do nothing for these New Yorkers — are they only not bourgeois enough for him?

Or is it merely that going through the dysfunction of public housing would make a mockery of his plans to “socialize” buildings that at the moment are personal?

For what it’s value, the NYPD cares: It drove crime in public housing down 14.7% in February and 12.1% year-to-date with record-low taking pictures incidents, taking pictures victims, murders and robberies.

Instead of asking the president for $21 billion for the Sunnyside project, Mamdani may discover $400 million in his own price range to rehab these NYCHA items.

You may most likely even get a great TikTok video out of it, Mr. Mayor.
