Amanda Anisimova heads into Saturday’s Wimbledon ultimate having already ruffled the feathers of her semi-final adversary, Aryna Sabalenka. The American triumphed over the world No.1 in a nail-biting three-hour match on Thursday, successful 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 amidst a whirlwind of pleasure and controversy.

Sabalenka was left fuming by two incidents during the match, each involving Anisimova’s conduct on courtroom. The Belarusian did not maintain back in expressing her frustration at Anisimova during her post-match press convention.

Anisimova was reprimanded by the umpire for allegedly celebrating a shot earlier than it had handed Sabalenka and was formally awarded to the first-time semi-finalist. Players can generally be penalized for such untimely celebrations, referred to as hindrances.

In the third set, Anisimova acquired fortunate with a web wire that noticed her shot trickle onto Sabalenka’s facet of the courtroom, leaving the latter unable to return it.

Usually, gamers acknowledge such strokes of luck with a gesture of apology to their opponent, typically by raising their racket or hand. However, Anisimova selected to have fun as an alternative, turning to the group with a triumphant roar as she moved one step nearer to the ultimate.

Addressing the untimely celebration controversy, Sabalenka responded: “I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I mean, that’s a bit too early. Then she kind of p***ed me off saying: ‘Oh, that’s what she does all the time.'”.

“I was grateful that she actually said that because it actually helped me to keep fighting. I’m like, ‘OK, now I’m going to show you the tennis.’ I came back because I got really angry in that moment, probably in the third set I should have remembered that.”

When questioned about Anisimova not following customized by apologizing to Sabalenka, the highest seed elaborated: “I just looked at her and, I mean, for sure she didn’t hear me. I was like: ‘You don’t want to say sorry?’ She just wanted, I guess, badly to win this match.

“It’s on her. If she would not really feel like saying sorry, like she barely acquired that time and she or he did not really feel like saying sorry for that tough scenario, that is on her.”

The duo did exchange a cordial hug at the net, though, once Anisimova’s triumph had been sealed.

The American attempted to defuse the tension right after the match and subsequently shared a gracious message to Sabalenka on Instagram.

“Just wanna say what a battle on the market, credit to Aryna, she is such an unimaginable competitor,” she wrote. “I’m sure we’ve got many more great battles to return.”
