Experts have issued a main update on plans to introduce strict new eyesight testing guidelines for older drivers. A Department for Transport (DfT) session on necessary eyesight checks for older highway customers has simply ended, with responses now being analysed by officers.

However, the specialists didn’t need guidelines to stop there, with specialists demanding that eyesight checks didn’t simply focus on older drivers and had been as an alternative rolled out more broadly. The group needs to see eyesight testing guidelines rolled out for each motorist at licence renewal, which means youthful drivers would even be affected once they update their photocard each 10 years.

The AOP defined: “Sight deterioration can occur at any age, with many individuals not noticing an early visual change. Therefore, the requirement to submit formal evidence of a valid sight test should be extended to the application stage and every renewal thereafter for all drivers: every 10 years for most and then every three years from the age of 70.

“Irrespective of this consultation, regular sight tests are critical for identifying changes in vision and eye conditions that can impact sight, therefore reducing the current and future risk of driving accidents. Vision can change at any age, and many conditions that affect driving develop gradually and may lack early symptoms.

“A policy of mandatory eyesight tests limited only to older drivers therefore fails to address a known weakness in the system: that large numbers of drivers aged under 70 have undetected or uncorrected visual impairment.”

The specialists harassed that this new coverage would offer a “significant improvement” on the present system, which is solely dependent on drivers self-declaring whether or not their imaginative and prescient is protected.

It is known that the DfT will analyse all of the responses to the session earlier than making a determination over any future rule modifications.
