Environmentalists are slamming Starbucks for falsely claiming its plastic cups are “widely recyclable,” after an investigation couldn’t affirm a single one being recycled.

Vermont-based Beyond Plastics mentioned Monday that almost all of the single-use, plastic cold beverage cups positioned in recycling bins at Starbucks shops it not too long ago tracked ended up in landfills or incinerators.

The nonprofit advocacy group positioned 69 Bluetooth-enabled trackers inside Starbucks’ in-store recycling bins. Of the 47 that offered knowledge, 23 ended up in landfills and 11 wound up at incinerator services.

Ten more have been final detected at waste switch stations, a stop on the way in which to a landfill, and three made it to materials restoration services, which type plastics, presumably for recycling. But not a single cup was really confirmed to be recycled, in response to the group.

“It’s kind of stunning that they won’t tell the public where this plastic is going after people dutifully make sure it’s clean and put it in the special recycling bin,” Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics and a former regional administrator for the US Environmental Protection Agency, instructed The Post.

A Starbucks spokesperson instructed The Post the company takes challenge with the examine’s methodology.

“Studies that place electronic trackers inside cups do not reflect how recycling systems operate in practice,” the spokesperson mentioned.

“These materials, like Bluetooth-enabled trackers, are not accepted in recycling streams and can introduce contamination, which may change where cups are routed. Starbucks cups are designed to be recyclable, and have received a ‘widely accepted for recycling’ designation from How2Recycle.”

Outraged environmentalists are planning 9 demonstrations throughout the state this week, together with ones in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, as they call on the java giant to stop spouting what the nonprofit referred to as “rubbish claims.”

Protesters are additionally urging lawmakers to cross the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, which might pressure corporations like Starbucks to cut back their use of plastic packaging and reimburse municipalities for waste management prices.

In 2020, Starbucks pledged to make 100% of its buyer packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of the last decade. It began permitting US clients to carry their own reusable cups for cellular and drive-through orders in 2024.

And in February, Starbucks printed a joint press release with WM, the nation’s largest waste hauler, previously often known as Waste Management, asserting that its cold beverage cups – that are made with polypropylene, or No. 5 plastic – at the moment are “widely recyclable.”

“Recycling your Starbucks cold cups just got easier,” the company mentioned in a assertion, including that more than 60% of US households might now recycle the cups of their curbside bins.

But one Starbucks cup included within the investigation final pinged at a waste facility in Peekskill, NY – the biggest source of air air pollution in Westchester County, in response to Beyond Plastics.

“Starbucks made $1.8 billion in profit in North America last year,” mentioned Courtney Williams, a most cancers researcher who based the Westchester Alliance for Sustainable Solutions, which can converse at a protest in Peekskill this Saturday. “How much of that was made from polluting our air, soil and waterways with single use plastic?”

Other cups that have been recycled in New York City ended up in landfills as far-off as Pennsylvania, Ohio and even Alabama. Waste exporting prices town almost half a billion {dollars} every year, in response to the NYC Department of Sanitation.

Susan Keefe, the Southern California director for Beyond Plastics, estimated Starbucks goes by way of 8 million plastic cups every day, in response to calculations primarily based on the company’s annual public knowledge.

She mentioned the investigation centered on Starbucks as a result of it’s a notably flagrant offender, labeling trash bins in its shops with phrases like “landfill,” “recycling” and “compost” – though most of it ends up within the landfill on the end.

“They go above and beyond chains like Dunkin’, for example, [because] they actually customize the recycling bins, and this, I think, is deceptive and egregious,” Keefe instructed The Post. “I don’t know of any restaurant that actually goes to that extent to deceive their customers.”

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, who took the helm in September 2024, has been main a turnaround plan centered on enhancing customer support and making shops more welcoming, hopeful that clients might be satisfied to sit down, loosen up and perhaps order seconds.

The company has spent $1 billion to retrofit shops with comfortable armchairs, plants and hardcover books. It additionally introduced back Sharpies to shops so baristas can doodle on cups; condiment bars; and reusable ceramic mugs for in-store clients.

Keefe claimed throughout visits to roughly 50 shops, perhaps “the occasional one person” was ingesting from a reusable mug out of “dozens and dozens” of clients.

“It just kind of irritates me because they’re not even implementing and funding the policy that they announced a year and a half ago in their existing stores,” Keefe mentioned. When she requested clients whether or not they would contemplate ingesting out of the mugs, many replied that they thought the mugs have been for sale, she added.

Beyond Plastics is urging Starbucks to “stop lying” about its recycling insurance policies, take down the recycling visuals in shops, swap from polypropylene cups to fiber-based cups and implement their ceramic mug coverage.

In a web page on Starbucks’s web site about its recycling and waste discount insurance policies, the company acknowledged that recycling may be “extremely challenging,” noting that one incorrect merchandise in a recycling bin can render the complete can’s contents unrecyclable.

It additionally famous that completely different business recyclers settle for completely different supplies, so the company can’t implement a common program throughout its footprint, and that for shops situated in procuring malls, it’s typically the owner who oversees waste assortment.
