There’s by no means been one other nation like America. That’s not mere patriotic hyperbole for our 250th anniversary. It’s historic reality. But many of us have by no means actually understood it. Or possibly we forgot what we heard in class on the subject a long time in the past. Or did we ever hear it? Today most faculties wouldn’t dare say something alongside such strains, which is exactly why I wrote my e book “REVOLUTION: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World.”

But it’s one thing most Americans used to know —and it’s extraordinarily important. We need to start out with the American Revolution itself, which is the solely revolution in world historical past that really delivered on the guarantees it made, to create a nation the place the people have been in charge, a nation that — in Lincoln’s well-known phrases — was “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Of course different revolutions claimed to be about the identical factor, promising that when all the pieces was throughout “the people” can be in charge. But each one betrayed this, creating ranges of distress and struggling that are virtually unimaginable.

Take the French Revolution, which started simply a few years after our own Revolution, and was championed by some of the figures concerned in our Revolution — like Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine. They all appeared to suppose it will be a glad reprisal of what occurred right here. It was something however that, ending in a nightmare massacre of terror.

What went unsuitable? Just like us, the French determined they didn’t like the concept of monarchy. So they beheaded their king and queen. But the radicals didn’t stop there.

They additionally determined to kill each priest and nun. Let’s simply say it didn’t go nicely for anybody. Where the American revolutionaries have been principally people of religion — and noticed their religion because the very cause they have been doing what they have been doing — the French revolutionaries noticed religion and the church as the issue. The Americans declared that their liberties got here from God, and that it was the position of authorities to guard these liberties. The French didn’t know the place their liberties got here from.  So they traded King Louis XVI for a dictator named Napoleon—who topped himself emperor.

Whatever occurred to the noble French beliefs of liberte, egalite, and fraternite?

Then there are the even worse nightmares of the Bolshevik and Maoist revolutions in Russia and China. The Soviets murdered the Tsar and his household, giving the Russian people the sadistic management of Lenin and Stalin and the hell of what Solzhenitsyn known as “the Gulag Archipelago.” The Chinese communists received rid of the Emperor and — identical to the Soviets — murdered tens of millions of their own people.

Every one of these “revolutions” was a false revolution that really changed struggling with more struggling, and inequality with more inequality, creating dystopian worlds too terrible to ponder.

So how did these so-called revolutions get it so grotesquely unsuitable? And how did we within the American Revolution get it proper, creating a nation the place the people actually did govern themselves, simply as was hoped and promised, and are persevering with to take action, 250 years later?

The reply couldn’t be less complicated. The leaders of our Revolution understood that it wasn’t enough to get rid of a king or a tsar or emperor and hope for the best. You couldn’t simply tear down what you didn’t like. You needed to substitute it with one thing else. But what?

The reply is so easy many people refuse to imagine it. You can say it in three letters: “God.” I’ll wager you didn’t hear that in your public faculty social research class. But it’s plain. Of course the boys of the American Revolution knew they couldn’t power God on anybody, as a result of they believed in liberty, particularly non secular liberty. So if religion was essential, it will need to come back from the people themselves, voluntarily. The complete factor was a gamble, or as many have stated, “an experiment.”

But the rationale they thought it may work in 1776 was as a result of it had been working for the earlier 150 years. Most of the Americans within the Revolution have been descended from women and men who within the earlier century had braved harmful sea-crossings to dwell out their Christian religion as they noticed match. And during all this time they actually had been self-governing. So religion within the God of the Bible was virtually ubiquitous in Colonial America, and really elevated during the Great Awakening, below the preaching of the evangelist George Whitefield, who was the largest celeb of his time.

Three- quarters of everybody within the colonies heard him preach in individual not less than as soon as. So the Americans have been a decidedly faith-filled people.

When the British within the 1760s determined to crack down on the Colonies, and tax them and persecute them, they pushed back. Hard. They had the loopy thought that they have been nonetheless free women and men who might govern themselves and tax themselves. After all, hadn’t they been doing so for over a century? And they knew that their liberties have been God-given, not given to them by parliament or the king.

So when in 1776 they lastly determined to declare independence from the monarch in Great Britain, they have been concurrently reaffirming their dependence on God. And they weren’t shy about saying so.
On August 1st, the day earlier than the members of Congress formally signed the Declaration of Independence, they gathered to listen to Samuel Adams give a speech on the steps of Independence Hall. In it he declared “We have this day restored the Sovereign, to whom all men ought to be obedient.” Adams — whom they known as the “Father of the Revolution” — was saying it explicitly.

Here was a member of Congress telling each different member of Congress that God was the ruler of the model new nation, and that if we seemed to him for steerage, we might  govern ourselves. We would do one thing that hadn’t been performed in three thousand years. Just like the traditional Israelites within the Sinai wilderness, who escaped bondage below Pharaoh, we’d look to God immediately, and would rule ourselves with out an earthly king. Everyone in Congress understood this.

When requested to create a seal for the new nation, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson — usually thought the least non secular of the founders — each got here up with pictures of this very occasion. Franklin’s image was of Moses watching God half the Red Sea whereas Pharaoh drowned and Jefferson’s was of the Israelites being led by a pillar of fire and a cloud. Could something be more clear? So why haven’t most of us heard this earlier than? Well, that’s one other story.
