Byron admission speaks volumes after Bell decision – Sports News
Christopher Bell held off William Byron to win at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, as his opponent decided against a potential race-winning move due to their close relationship. Byron was waiting in the wings as Bell and Kyle Busch battled for the lead, but his racing integrity meant that he didn’t go all out for first place.
It looked like Busch would finally end his winless streak after leading for 42 laps, but a late yellow flag bunched up the group and Bell benefitted from having fresher tires. It also brought Byron back into the equation, who was in hot pursuit of Bell and Busch as he sat back and waited for his moment.
“I was really close,” Byron said after the race. “I felt like the battle between him and Kyle…sitting there waiting for one of them to bobble or slide their tires.
“Bell got by him and I felt like once he got clear, his car was super loose, and it kind of gave me a couple shots at him. I just couldn’t get beside him”.
Byron could have pushed Bell out of his way, but wanted to race clean and continue his respectful relationship with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.
“Whenever Kyle was leading, I was just trying to be so cautious,” said Bell. “Obviously, we know what happened last year. I didn’t want that to happen. I wanted to pass him clean. He was just doing such a good job at running his race, and he could get off the corners just good enough that I couldn’t get inside of him.
“But there I started peeking a nose, and he bobbled and allowed me to get out front. Whenever I did, I’m, like, ‘OK, just don’t beat yourself.’ Those were about the five or six sloppiest laps I’ve ever run.”
Busch’s win drought has now extended to 60, the longest of his career, and he was distraught when speaking with reporters after falling from first to fifth. “Once we had that yellow, you’re just in defense mode,” Busch said. “Hated the contact in two and three bent the toe link.
“I feel like maybe the two-lap fresher tires that the 20 had was the difference. All things considered, I’d love to have equal tires to the 20 and get back after it, see if we could do it that way, but I also hated to see that yellow come out.
“Felt like we had a little bit of a gap there, enough of a gap that I was protecting my tires, I could run all the lines that I wanted to run. I didn’t have to run defensive lines and use up my stuff even more so.
“The 20 was right on me. I’ll give Christopher (Bell) credit, he ran me really hard and I was a complete butthead. But he did a great job working me over and just doing it the right way and being able to get by. Congrats to him, good job to the 20 bunch, but wish it was us.”
