The DVLA has issued a essential message to highway customers ahead of a major car tax rule change coming in a matter of days. Posting on social media web site X, the DVLA reminded highway customers of updates to the “Expensive Car Supplement” threshold, with electric car homeowners set to note a distinction.

The Expensive Car Supplement is an extra £425 charge paid by homeowners of costly petrol, diesel and electric vehicles with a record price of over £40,000. This is the overall worth of the car, together with any elective additionals added to a vehicle initially valued at beneath £40,000.

The additional charge is added onto annual tax payments, growing the associated fee of possession by a whole bunch of kilos yearly. However, there have been considerations that electric car homeowners have been unfairly punished, with many mid-range household electrics valued over the £40,000 cut-off.

The DVLA posted on X: “From 1 April 2026, the expensive car supplement threshold for electric cars will rise from £40,000 to £50,000. This means the additional rate won’t apply to electric cars priced under £50,000, as long as they were first registered from 1 April 2025.”

HM Revenue and Customs confirmed the rule change final November, following its announcement within the Autumn Budget. HMRC stated the new threshold modifications would “positively impact individuals who purchase or own an EV first registered from 1 April 2025”.

HMRC defined: (*1*)

Calculations estimate that the Treasury is anticipated to lose £50million in potential income over the 2026/27 financial 12 months.
