Iga Swiatek has spoken publicly for the primary time about her choice to break up from coach Wim Fissette, as she will get prepared to start the clay-court season with a new mentor.

Besides, I don’t make many changes within the team. I think that’s a very good approach. I like to give the team the opportunity to ‘reset’ and start working a little differently.

“However, on this case, I felt it was merely time for a change. Yes, it wasn’t a choice made in Miami – it was a longer course of during which I rigorously thought of the whole lot.”

Swiatek was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open in February, surrendering a one-set advantage against Maria Sakkari. That appeared to be the turning point for the world No. 3 to make an adjustment. She ultimately chose to separate from her coach.

She added: “During the match in Doha, I noticed I wasn’t feeling pretty much as good on courtroom as I had earlier than. Of course, totally different tournaments can have totally different causes for a poor performance-sometimes I simply know I wasn’t centered that day, typically my forehand was failing, typically one thing else. It occurs. But I felt like I wasn’t enjoying as effectively, and that is why I began dropping confidence.

“After my loss to Maria Sakkari, we sat down and had a long talk. We discussed what to change and how to approach the following week so I could get back to my solid game. There were different moments, different approaches and retreats – this stage lasted several weeks.”

Swiatek did not start looking for a new coach till she had formally parted methods with Fissette early final week. However, the 24-year-old declined to touch upon hypothesis that Nadal assisted her within the course of.

“You know, Rafa is my idol and basically the only person I watched play tennis as a child,” she stated.

“He was also kind enough to talk to me several times during his career and give me tips. He’s the person I can turn to if I need help or have a problem. Having someone so experienced – the best, the GOAT, in fact – is obviously a fantastic opportunity, and I’ll take advantage of it if I can.

“Rafa may be very open. He’s a great man. Just having his quantity and having the ability to contact him is a big honor. But truthfully, whether or not he helped me or not, I’d like to keep it between us, as a result of he is half of this story. I would not need to put him in an awkward place.”
