Kevin Harvick calls for NASCAR driver to be banned – Sports News
Kevin Harvick has criticized NASCAR after it had decided to fine Austin Cindric for his crash into Ty Dillon and believes that he should have been suspended.
In Lap 4 of the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix last weekend, Cindric was battling Ty Dillon for position as the Kaulig Racing driver edged the Team Penske star by pushing him off the line. As the two were on the frontstretch, Cindric then made contact with Dillon’s rear and spun him out with it being declared an intentional move.
But despite the official ruling that Cindric’s actions were intentional in crashing into Dillon, NASCAR instead gave out a financial punishment rather than suspending the driver – something which Harvick should have believed happened.
On FOX’s pre-race show ahead of this weekend’s events, Harvick had said: “That’s an awful call … [Austin Cindric] should have been suspended.
“I think that as a driver, with the way things have gone and in this particular car, this is something unanimously decided on the driver’s side that, that needs to be black and white. And now we’re kinda back to this restart thing, or the finish in the caution flag. Now we don’t know exactly where we stand. Whether you’re going 35 miles an hour or 135 miles an hour, should’ve been suspended”.
While he had not been suspended, Cindric had instead been docked 50 driver points – which has cost him hugely at the start of the season and seen him drop from 11th to 35th in the standings.
But Harvick felt, as many others had, that he been very lucky to get away with a one-race suspension for his act that has been deemed as intentional.
NASCAR managing director Mike Forde explained the ruling and why the penalty was given out, differing to similar incidents in which drivers have been suspended for.

He said: “The reason we landed on the points and fine is we take every situation and every violation as its own unique incident. When I hit social media after this penalty is announced, my guess is that there is going to be several people who feel this is the wrong call.
“And it may not be the popular call, but when we look at penalties, we do not really care how popular we are. We try to do the right thing here.”
