Never one to draw back from voicing his opinion, two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has spoken out against the return of ‘The Chase’ in place of the Playoffs.
Since NASCAR introduced it was turning back the clock and bringing back the 10-race ‘Chase’ for the championship, because it used between 2004 and 2013, the response from present and former drivers alike has been largely optimistic.
Most have described it as a good compromise between a return to the full 36-race championship NASCAR ran previous to ‘The Chase’ and the much-maligned event fashion Playoffs, which noticed drivers knocked out by means of three three-race rounds earlier than the total winner was decided in a single championship race.

“I thought we got away from it for a reason in the past, so I’m not real sure why we went back to it,” Busch admitted. “The reason why we sort of went away from it was obviously Jimmie Johnson’s dominance, number one, but I feel like number two is there were times where guys, like myself, who would have one bad race or two that would then knock them out of the championship, basically.
“Like, I finished third one year, I finished fifth another year, just from having a wreck in one race. Like, Talladega, you get caught up in a wreck and boom, you can’t make up enough points to get back to the championship, but you’re going to finish third in points.
“I got wrecked at Kansas one year, and that put me fifth in the championship, I think. So, it’s just stuff like that I don’t really agree with it.”
Both of Busch’s championships thus far got here during the Playoff years in 2015 and 2019, whereas six of Johnson’s report seven titles had been received during the former ‘Chase’ run.
Having run full-time since 2005, Busch has, as he famous, seen each the good and dangerous sides of each codecs. “But obviously everybody’s going to look toward, you know, the regular season and maximizing all the stage points, things like that. Points racing, basically, and that lends itself to having to qualify good on Saturdays in order to be up there, up front, holding on to your track position for the first stage, getting that stage point.
“That’s probably our number one holdback with RCR, is just that we don’t tend to qualify good and hold on to the first stage point. That’s where we really get hurt throughout the season, is just our stage points and how much we have there. So, we’ve got to get better on all that. So, we’ll see.”
