LA Palisades firebug’s arrest isn’t relief — but a – Latest News

On Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom assured us that the arrest of Jonathan Rinderknecht, the alleged arsonist who set probably the most harmful wildfire in Los Angeles historical past, introduced “closure” to the “thousands of Californians whose lives were upended.”

He couldn’t be more improper.

Rinderknecht’s arrest isn’t an finish to the January tragedy that killed 12 of my neighbors and worn out 7,000 Pacific Palisades properties and companies.

It is only the start of a reckoning for California — and for the nation.

Why? Because because the investigation and prosecution unfolds, the tentacles of the case will pressure us to face up to the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into on a number of fronts.

The devastating Palisades Fire, which blazed out of control for practically three weeks, was a damning indictment of LA’s irresponsible management, with empty reservoirs and a lacking mayor.

But we haven’t but talked a lot in regards to the lacking firefighters.

At least 3% of Los Angeles County firefighters lived outdoors the state as of 2022 — many of them senior commanders.

They reside in border states like Arizona or Nevada, and at the same time as distant as Florida and Alaska.

There they’ll afford to own properties and may ship their kids to varsities that don’t exchange math classes with gender-identity quizzes.

They fly in to do a 7-to-12-day shift, then fly home for a number of weeks off.

Who might blame them, given the Golden State’s exorbitant price of residing?

On the primary night time of the fires, when the winds turned a fever dream into a nightmare, the county put out an all-hands call for firefighters.

Everyone was requested to report to work as quickly as doable, no exceptions.

But with 3% of the pressure residing in different states — and tons of more firefighters residing hours away, in Central and Northern California — the investigation might uncover some uncomfortable truths.

How many of our firefighters have been lacking in motion as Rinderknecht’s fire raged past control?

How many properties burned as a result of they may not take their posts when ordered?

Why hasn’t Los Angeles set any kind of residency requirement for its emergency personnel, like most different huge cities do?

It’s not nearly questionable employment ways; it’s in regards to the interconnectedness of each horrible progressive thought — which we now know can actually burn down complete neighborhoods.

How can we anticipate our first responders to guard us when it counts if they’ll’t even afford to stay right here?

Here’s one other tentacle: The arsonist is a twin citizen, born and raised in France, who took up residence within the United States as an grownup.

President Donald Trump has made it his mission to wrestle with our unlawful immigration downside, but because the arson arrest makes clear, America goes to need to take a long, arduous take a look at its legal immigration system, too.

Rinderknecht’s chaos, the “despair and bitterness” of the rap tune he had on repeat, ought to have been France’s downside, not ours.

America has enough of our own criminals and fringe lunatics. Why was this arsonist right here in any respect?

Finally, the case might make us confront the insidious concern lurking beneath this arrest: the specter of terrorism.

Right now, the arson suspect is being dismissed as a lone wolf, but we’ve seen a regarding uptick in home terrorism since Trump was re-elected.

Is there a connection to the deliberate and despicable anti-government chaos we’re seeing as we speak in Portland, Chicago and elsewhere?

Was Rinderknecht impressed by the online hatred that’s fueling violence throughout us?

The accused arsonist was “agitated and angry,” witnesses say, and obsessive about “dystopian” visions.

What occurred in Los Angeles County in January has a lot of the markers of home terrorism — one more tentacle that would attain out far past California.

If it seems Rinderknecht had connections to teams like Antifa, this case goes from unhealthy to worse . . . for all of us.

The arsonist will probably be held accountable, but his apprehension isn’t the top of something.

All eyes are on California lately, as Newsom dangles his presidential ambitions and Kamala Harris tours the nation to stay related.

With the current epic meltdown of gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter, the remainder of America is being handled to the day by day madness we undergo by the hands of each our flesh pressers and our criminals.

The fires, the fallout and the felonies are half of that bigger story — and this state and our nation should now grapple with the implications.
