Mamdani wants to give you ‘free’ 2-K in the worst – Latest News
City Hall says Gov. Kathy Hochul is sending Mayor Zohran Mamdani “$73 million to fund the first set of free 2-K seats,” 2,000 spots in 4 neighborhoods — or $36,500 per “free” seat, which is half again the $24,000 market price for day care (which is all 2-K even pretends to be) for such tots.
And MamCare doesn’t get any cheaper in Year Two, when the gov’s promised $425 million to deal with about 12,000 2-K kiddies, which works out to $35,400 per (lovable little) head.
Some apparent factors:
1) This isn’t “free”: dollars-for-donuts, it’s fairly dear for the taxpayers.
2) It’s not the “investment” City Hall’s press release calls it: It’s a social-welfare program, a new entitlement whose prices will certainly grow.
3) It’d be a lot cheaper to simply give the dad and mom vouchers to use at a non-public day-care — and sure more in style, too, since you’d have a lot more alternative and will discover a more handy locale run by people you trust, reasonably than being caught with the restricted choices the metropolis affords.

Of course, then the staff wouldn’t be unionized members of the United Federation of Teachers, incomes outsized perks and pay — with automatically-deducted dues that prime off the UFT’s coffers to feed its huge political energy.
And if you’re tempted to consider that government-run day care goes to be higher-quality, allow us to direct your consideration to the city-run (or UFT-run) public colleges, which spend $40,000 per child for mediocre-at-best outcomes.
Lot of dad and mom will respect help making ends meet, however merely assembly their day-care wants plainly isn’t what MamdaniCare is all about.
