Despite a $7.1 billion gap, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pushed back in opposition to any severe reducing to his funds and as an alternative needs to delay required payments to metropolis pension funds.

That’s exactly the type of ways that introduced the town to the brink of chapter within the ’70s.

At the least, it’ll saddle future taxpayers with pointless prices.

For the second, the town is on-track to assembly its long-term pension-funding obligations by its 2032 deadline.

Yet to help close his funds gap, Mamdani would push $1 billion price of payments into the 2040s.

That can be each pricey and dangerous.

It would go away the fund much less sound because it strives to cowl future pension payments to municipal retirees (which by law are backed by taxpayers).

And it will saddle future metropolis budgets with added prices.

As the Citizens Budget Commission’s Andrew Rein warns, such a transfer would power “our children [to] pay even more of our bills.”

Meanwhile, Hizzoner’s funds clocks in at a whopping $127 billion. Budget hawks would possibly call that a target-rich surroundings.

The mayor has promised to discover $1.7 billion in financial savings from his companies; if Albany permits a delay of its class-size mandate, saving $1.4 billion, and the town is in a position to spend much less on housing vouchers, representing one other $1.3 billion, that may cowl some of the shortfall.

Those are large ifs, however it’s a begin. And there’s absolutely loads more that may and needs to be cut earlier than resorting to financial gimmicks, like delaying pension payments.

Again, the town used simply that sort of transfer for years — spending more than City Hall raked in income — till it practically went broke, with no one speeding to bail it out.

Mamdani wants to be taught from that lesson, play by the principles and stop eager about how to spend more than he’s obtained.

For all his socialist desires, he nonetheless wants to deal with actuality. Or the town pays the price.
