Of course Zohran Mamdani couldn’t handle a respectable welcome for the king of England: That would’ve required maturity, grace and humility that our mayor simply doesn’t have.

Mamdani did absolutely the minimal to welcome King Charles to New York as he visited town Wednesday, agreeing (belatedly!) to only one temporary assembly with the monarch, on the 9/11 memorial — although the royal visited a number of websites throughout city.

Like any chief-executive job, New York’s mayor has occasional ceremonial duties — however Mamdani’s not occupied with them, as they received’t carry many TikTok likes.

Showing respect for the king is displaying respect for Britain, but Mamdani couldn’t resist displaying disrespect.

Past mayors have completed their obligation with British royals: Mayor Robert Wagner threw a ticker-tape parade on Queen Elizabeth’s arrival within the metropolis in 1957; Mayor Abe Beame’s granddaughter greeted her with flowers as her ship sailed in twenty years later.

But Mamdani couldn’t hassle with any such gestures; he couldn’t even set apart his obsession with colonialism, telling reporters he hoped to push Charles “to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond,” a 105-carat gem initially from India and now on show on the Tower of London.

But nothing is past politics for a trendy progressive; each public occasion is just an alternative for divisive posturing.

Charles ought to in all probability be grateful the mayor didn’t attempt to arrest him, as he’s vowed to put Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in cuffs.

Mamdani’s inexperience is no excuse for letting his personal passions blind him to the duties of his high workplace; it’s his habit to performative shows that makes him such a clown.

At best, his youth means there’s a likelihood he’ll be taught from his graceless errors, and do a bit higher the subsequent time he’s known as to symbolize all of the people of New York City.
