Millions of UK drivers could face fines of up to £1,000 and even a driving ban if they fail to renew their licences on time, according to recent research.

Data obtained from the DVLA through a Freedom of Information request by Co-op Insurance has revealed that nearly 2.3 million driving licences are set to expire in 2025, with a significant number from the previous year still awaiting renewal.

Under UK law, photocard driving licences must be renewed every 10 years.

The DVLA typically sends out reminders before a licence expires, but failing to act on this could result in drivers being legally unable to operate a vehicle.

Those caught driving with an expired licence risk hefty fines, and insurance claims could be invalidated if an accident occurs while their licence is out of date.

Drivers can renew their full or provisional driving licences online via the DVLA website, at a Post Office, or by post.

Online renewals cost £14 and require either a UK passport or an identity document linked to a UK Visas and Immigration account (for non-UK citizens).

Payments can be made using a MasterCard, Visa, Electron, or Delta debit or credit card.

If a driver’s name or title changes, they cannot renew online and must apply via post instead. There is no renewal fee for those aged 70 or older or those holding a medical short-period licence.

Driving with an expired licence is a serious offence, the penalties including:

  • A fine of up to £1,000
  • Potential disqualification from driving
  • The risk of having insurance claims denied

Paul Evans, Head of Motor at Co-op Insurance, emphasised the importance of checking licence validity: “Driving plays a vital role in people’s lives, whether for work or leisure.

“However, our research indicates that many drivers may unknowingly be at risk due to expired licences. We urge motorists to check their licences to ensure they remain valid, as failing to renew could lead to significant consequences, including declined insurance claims in the event of an accident.”
