NASCAR fans rage at TV commercial during final – Sports News
NASCAR fans were left seething after the Xfinity Series race in Phoenix cut to a commercial break on Peachtree TV as the leaders headed into the final lap. The Peachtree feed cut to a commercial and never returned to the race as Aric Almirola narrowly went on to take the checkered flag ahead of Cup Series star Alex Bowman.
To make matters worse, instead of Peachtree’s feed returning to Phoenix, viewers were treated to the intro for the station’s coverage of Saturday night’s NBA game between the Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks.
“Thanks a lot to The CW & their local network in the Atlanta area Peachtree TV for cutting off the last lap of the NASCAR Xfinity race to put the Hawks pregame show on. What an embarrassment!” one viewer fumed.
“Too bad we didn’t see it in Atlanta! Your CW affiliate WPCH Peachtree TV switched to Atlanta Hawks basketball as the field came to the White flag! Watched the whole race starting at 5pm, I’m ——! Somebody at Nascar better call that station. If that happens again I’m out!” another tweeted. “Glad you posted it since your dog —- CW broadcast went to a commercial on the last lap,” a third vented.
NASCAR fans watching on the network were robbed of a grandstand finish, with Almirola pipping Bowman on the final lap despite the Cup Series star leading up until the final turn. It was the eighth career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory for the 40-year-old.
“I just knew I needed to get from there to here first,” Almirola said. “I knew I was going to use him up a little bit, but was trying to win the race. I feel like it was warranted. I didn’t feel like I did anything overly egregious. I just throttled up, and it was a drag race to the start-finish line.”
As for Bowman, who’ll start Sunday’s Cup Series race from 32nd, missed out on a victory in his home State of Arizona. Bowman led for 70 total laps, but he was unhappy with the contact made with Almirola during the final lap after exchanging paint.

“I would have hoped he would have given me a lane on exit,” said Bowman. “He just exited like I wasn’t there. He was better than us for sure, but I was just trying to capitalize on that restart and try to win the race.
“I got shoved into the fence, and the race car is destroyed. Bummer for that, but hats off to the HendrickCars.com crew.”
