The Issue: Over half of third- to fifth-grade college students in New York failing their English Language Arts check.

New York state training insurance policies are the right instance of madness: Doing the identical factor again and again, anticipating that one way or the other issues will likely be totally different (“Bad read: NYS failing kids,” Aug. 8).

We already spend double the national average per pupil. And for what? And what’s going to our state legislators do about these falling literacy charges? Authorize an increase in training funding.

We ought to close colleges which can be poorly performing, fire academics who can’t or gained’t educate, eradicate the bloated forms that’s been allowed to flourish, maintain principals and academics accountable — and stop throwing money at this downside: It’s not working.

Your article shaming the academics unions for the abysmal studying scores is partly on level, however doesn’t go far enough in spreading the blame.

While the unions, their leaders and bureaucratic directors are all at fault, these faults can simply be overcome by dad and mom setting priorities for his or her kids’s training. Television, video video games and cellphones, all offered by dad and mom, have changed books, and kids should not being taught that studying might be enjoyable.

Union, NJ

We refuse to confess that many of the issues all through the New York City faculty system outcome from a full lack of self-discipline. Teachers should waste far an excessive amount of time always disciplining disruptive college students. The final a number of mayors have made it just about unimaginable to droop troublemakers.

We don’t need mayoral control — we need people who know the system to run it. Bring back the faculties for the recalcitrant. Our faculty system went southward when these colleges have been abolished attributable to alleged racism. No youngster has the best to disrupt one other youngster’s training.

Ed Greenspan

Brooklyn

The state of youngster training in New York is horrifying. But more horrifying is that progressive socialists are getting precisely what they need.

An illiterate population suits completely with socialists’ plans. Educated people ask questions and socialists need no half of that. As long as they’ve uneducated socialist drones, they’ll win.

New Yorkers higher wake up quickly to this insidious plan, or they are going to be in large hassle.

The union doesn’t care about bettering the GPA or pupil attendance. By growing state faculty help, Gov. Hochul in impact simply gave academics a raise, so she purchased their vote with tax {dollars}.

Abolish the union or change academics with AI robots, who should not tenured and may simply be programed to correctly educate a pupil. Until then, put cameras in all rooms to monitor trainer conduct.

Joe Cyran

Buffalo

Stop rewarding academics who can’t raise studying scores. Stop reinforcing failure.

Relocate profitable academics to the lowest-performing colleges. Link welfare, Section 8, SNAP, involvement of each dad and mom, attendance and conduct to check scores. Nothing else has labored. Failure in class will not be an intelligence downside, it’s a cultural downside.

Michael Castagna

Brooklyn

How many more tales should we learn in regards to the dismal efficiency of the town’s public colleges earlier than one thing is definitely finished about it?

Lowering requirements is a con sport, social promotion is a shame and the union appears to have limitless capability to guard even probably the most incompetent academics. Unless we now have faculty selection, the destruction of our youngsters’ training won’t ever get higher and that’s a crime.

Robert DiNardo

Farmingdale

Schools are failing as a result of the system operates in a manner the place the one people who need safety are the academics and directors.

If we will determine how to change this, and stability outcomes with out exhausting the academics, then we can have fixed the training system.

Steve Preziosa Sr.

Deptford Township, NJ
