When state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa final month struck down Massapequa’s school-board decision imposing Title IX in our faculties, it wasn’t simply an instance of Albany’s bureaucratic overreach.

It was a direct hit on ladies — and a warning shot to households throughout New York state.

Last fall, the Massapequa Board of Education handed a decision clarifying that our insurance policies bar organic males from utilizing feminine areas in native faculties, in line with President Donald Trump’s government order on Title IX.

In our Long Island faculty district, it wasn’t a controversial query; polling constantly exhibits that the majority Americans, throughout get together strains, consider boys don’t belong in ladies’ sports activities, locker rooms or loos.

But the New York Civil Liberties Union filed swimsuit with the commissioner, and her April ruling goals to drive the district to violate federal law and override the need of the group.

That ought to concern each mum or dad.

Women fought for many years for equal alternatives, for privateness and for equity in sports activities and areas.

Now these features are being stripped away by one-party rule in Albany, as Gov. Kathy Hochul and her allies push an agenda that weakens the function of the household and elevates ideology over common sense.

They insist that any scholar can select which locker room or rest room to make use of, regardless of organic intercourse.

And if ladies are uncomfortable, in the event that they really feel uncovered, anxious or pushed apart?

They’re informed to accommodate, to take a seat and settle for their second-class standing.

It’s all half of an effort to switch the authority of mother and father with the authority of the state.

After all, the State Education Department’s official steerage doc on transgender college students tells faculties that “safety concerns or lack of acceptance” imply children and youths “may begin their transition at school without parent/guardian knowledge.”

It’s instructing faculties to keep secrets and techniques from mother and father — as if a little one’s own household is a risk.

And the state’s overreach doesn’t stop at locker rooms or parental rights.

Rosa is forcing New York’s faculties to degrade their tutorial requirements, redefining “success” by dressing up decrease expectations as progress.

They’re not even attempting to cover it.

“Those districts that have put an exceeding value on high performing tests . . . are going to struggle,” Rosa declared final 12 months, because the Board of Regents ditched high-school exit exams in favor of project-based “Portrait of a Graduate” necessities.

“They are going to go through a mind shift, a value shift.”

Think about that: In New York faculties, high requirements are a factor of the previous.

Once you settle for that shift, and excellence is no longer the purpose, college students finish up with diplomas carrying little which means, unprepared for the tasks of citizenship.

Maybe that’s by design.

Why are faculty boards throughout New York going together with this?

Because they’re boxed in by what I call “Education Inc.” — a community of businesses, associations, legal professionals and advisers all pushing the identical message: Comply or else.

Albany, we’re informed, will withhold funding, or take away you from workplace, or in any other case punish those that step out of line.

Many board members will let you know privately they know that is fallacious. But they received’t dare say it publicly.

Intimidation, worry and silence are undermining mother and father and pressuring native faculty boards.

And our youngsters are paying the price.

It’s time for folks to step up and reengage.

Six years in the past, many of us had been outraged when COVID-era distant studying gave us a likelihood to see what our faculties had been actually instructing — however since then, we’ve fallen back into complacency.

So discover out who’s on your faculty board, and make a level of voting; these elections matter more than you could understand.

Then contact these board members and encourage them to do what’s proper.

It’s a lot simpler to stand firm when you realize your group is behind you.

Finally, we need more people with braveness to step ahead and get entangled.

Your faculties ought to mirror your group’s values — not Albany’s.

Massapequa has refused to quietly settle for insurance policies we so deeply oppose.

In December, we filed a lawsuit towards Rosa in federal courtroom searching for justice for our college students. That matter remains to be pending.

But no district can win this war on our ladies and on our households alone.

This isn’t a struggle over locker-room guidelines anymore — it’s a battle over who will get to determine what’s best for our youngsters.

Kerry Wachter is president of the Massapequa Board of Education.
