These are the highest fuel taxes in the nation, at 61 cents per gallon. And that’s earlier than gross sales tax and different charges.
California’s fuel taxes are so unpopular that voters recalled a Democrat who voted to raise them in 2018.
They’re so unpopular that the lawyer basic at the time — a man named Xavier Becerra — had to mislead voters who needed to vote to repeal them.
Opponents of the fuel tax positioned a poll measure, Proposition 6, on the November 2018 poll.
Becerra renamed the proposition to obscure the incontrovertible fact that it lowered the fuel tax. He wrote a misleading description that simply centered on the supposed loss of transportation funding that might outcome.

This is how he described it: “Eliminates recently enacted road repair and transportation funding by repealing revenues dedicated for those purposes.”
A decide ruled that Becerra’s language was deceptive. But an appeals court docket stated he had broad discretion.
The deceptive phrases made a distinction. One ballot confirmed solely 39% of voters favored Proposition 6 as Becerra described it. But 50% of voters in the identical ballot favored repealing the fuel tax.
Fast-forward eight years, and Becerra remains to be defending the fuel tax. He’s one of the solely candidates for governor, even amongst Democrats, who gained’t commit to repealing it.
In most states, that might be political suicide. But Becerra apparently believes if Trump does it, it’s unsuitable.

Newsom would do nicely to observe the president’s instance. If you actually need to make an impression on “affordability,” suspend or decrease the state’s fuel tax. At least till the Iran battle ends.
Who is aware of? The impact might even raise income for the state, over time, by boosting financial growth.
In the meantime, Newsom also needs to speed up native oil and fuel manufacturing. And he ought to stop preventing the Trump administration on offshore oil.
These are all political no-brainers. Some Democrats have already began figuring that out.
But apparently Newsom and Becerra love fuel taxes more than they love California drivers.
