Despite falling costs within the used market, the UK’s shift in direction of electric motoring “remains fragile”, in keeping with current evaluation. The AA mentioned that inconsistent messages from the Government are “undermining the longer-term health” of the transition away from petrol and diesel automobiles.

The organisation’s most up-to-date EV Readiness Index for the three months up to the tip of February confirmed an improved rating in comparison with the earlier quarter. This was largely attributable to reducing costs for used EVs, which have “dropped below the cost of equivalent petrol cars”, as per the analysis.

Used EVs had been found to be 10% cheaper than comparable inner combustion engine automobiles. The AA acknowledged that the provision of lower-priced EVs has created new alternatives for drivers considering a swap to electric.

However, it voiced concern that the automobiles’ “rapid depreciation” poses a “significant challenge” for fleets and producers, who depend upon robust residual values to help the acquisition and leasing of new fashions.

It additionally cautioned that the proposal to charge drivers of battery electric vehicles 3p per mile from April 2028 via electric vehicle excise obligation (eVED) has created “uncertainty” for some drivers contemplating transitioning to an EV.

AA president Edmund King mentioned: “Our AA UK EV Readiness Index shows that conditions for switching to electric cars are improving, with cheaper used EVs opening the door for more drivers. But the reality is that the transition remains fragile.

“Lower costs could also be excellent news for motorists wanting for a cut price but when values fall too rapidly it turns into unsustainable for fleets and producers who buy most new electric vehicles within the first place.

“At the same time, mixed messages from Government – including uncertainty around future taxes such as eVED – risk denting confidence just as the market is beginning to mature from the early adopters.”
