A common habit by petrol and diesel house owners should be “condemned to the dustbin of history” as specialists demand new fines for engine idling. Specialists are demanding that the punishment for leaving an engine operating when parked up in Scotland should quadruple in a hefty rise. 

A coalition of more than 20 organisations have written to Transport Scotland calling for fines to be elevated from the present £20 price to £80. Dr Shivali Fifield, chief officer on the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland, was amongst these to signal the coalition letter. The skilled steered the present penalties are inadequate and merely a “toothless enforcement regime” that doesn’t deter motorists.

Dr Fifield defined: “Engine idling exposes us to toxic exhaust fumes every single day, and like smoking in restaurants, is a habit that should be condemned to the dustbin of history.

“Yet regardless of public outrage, it continues unabated with a toothless enforcement regime that does nothing to deter offenders.”

Officials seem prepared to hear, with Glasgow City Council transport convener Angus Millar accepting that engine idling was a “important challenge”.

He stressed that more “strong powers” have been needed and even claimed the present guidelines weren’t harsh enough.

Angus added: “While engine idling stays a important challenge all through our cities and cities, the restrictions of Scotland’s present enforcement steering means councils are unable to present an efficient and lasting deterrent to this behaviour.”

The RAC explains that fines issued for engine idling will solely be imposed if a driver refuses to swap off their engine when requested to accomplish that by an authority determine.
