Portnoy slams NBC for missing Arnold Palmer – Sports News
NBC Sports faced criticism from Dave Portnoy and others for not broadcasting Russell Henley’s eagle on the 15th hole during Sunday’s final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Henley was in a tight competition with Collin Morikawa and Corey Conners throughout an unpredictable final round. After Morikawa bogeyed on the 14th, his lead dwindled to one stroke, followed by a par on the 15th.
NBC cameras switched to Henley’s eagle approach mid-shot after a lengthy Rolex commercial. This shot turned out to be crucial as he eventually won the tournament by a single stroke, finishing at -11.
Notably absent from the event were Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, who did not receive invitations, sparking controversy.
Dave Portnoy, CEO of Barstool and a self-proclaimed amateur golf fan, expressed disbelief at the broadcast. “I haven’t been watching golf lately, but why is golf just the worst at TV.
“Like here’s a commercial and they’re showing it, showing it, commercial, cool commercial by the way, but still a commercial nonetheless. Commercial, commercial, let’s end the commercial right?
“It’s a cool commercial, and then they get back to live golf and we’re towards the end of the tournament and there’s a guy one shot back on like the 16th or 17th hole.”
“Rolex commercial over. Back to [the] live broadcast, this guy Henley just took the lead. Are you kidding me? What’s the point of watching golf if you miss the most important shot of the whole tournament?”
The sentiment was echoed by the popular Fried Egg Golf account, which boasts over 100k followers, with a pointed remark: “If NBC’s Bay Hill production crew were in charge of the Miracle on Ice game” – suggesting that a Rolex ad would have interrupted the pivotal moment of the historic hockey match.

Henley clinched his fifth tour win, attributing part of his success to fortune. “Sometimes you get a good break like that and it hits the pin and goes in,” he admitted, expressing a desire to review the replay to fully grasp the speed of his critical eagle shot, which he described as “kind of surreal.”
The 35 year old was overjoyed with his triumph, reflecting on his long history with the event. “I’ve grown up watching this event and just seeing all the amazing finishes coming down the stretch,” Henley shared.
“You never really think you’re going to get that opportunity to come down the 18th and make a par to win. It’s really just hard to take in right now.”
