A travel expert has warned that wearing the wrong attire on a plane could potentially be life-threatening.

When preparing for a trip, there are numerous factors to consider, including what to pack, ensuring you arrive at the airport in time, and adhering to security regulations regarding carry-on luggage.

However, according to a travel advisor named Mari, it’s not just about the clothes in your suitcase you need to worry about, but also what you choose to wear during the journey. Mari, who frequently shares travel tips on her TikTok account, emphasized that you should “never” wear certain items on a plane as they could be dangerous in an in-flight emergency.

The issue isn’t with a specific type of clothing but rather the material it’s made from, as some can be more hazardous than others.

Mari strongly advises against wearing “synthetic materials” on a plane. In the event of an onboard fire, synthetic fibers could melt and adhere to your skin, resulting in severe burns.

She explained: “You should never wear synthetic materials on an airplane because if you’re in an instance where the airplane goes down or there’s a fire on the plane, synthetic material actually melts and will melt to your skin.

“That doesn’t mean that natural fibre clothing doesn’t cause burns or catch fire. It just means that synthetic fibre materials do cause burns at a higher rate. Synthetic fibres also ignite much more quickly, so even just the lightest spark will catch your clothing on fire.”

Avoiding synthetic materials means not wearing clothes made from polyester and nylon when on a plane. If possible, opt for clothing made from linen, cotton, silk, or wool. These natural materials are often more breathable, too, making you more comfortable on a stuffy plane even if there’s no emergency.

According to aviation expert Christine Negroni, staying safe in the air also means ditching yoga pants and leggings – no matter how comfortable they might be for a long flight.

The expert previously said: “You might have to escape through a cabin fire or there could be a separate fire on the ground once you leave the aircraft. Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibres because they are more likely to burn and stick to you if there is a fire. I’d advise wearing cotton clothes or anything made of natural fibres.”

Clothes you should avoid on a plane:

  1. High heels or flip flops: You should avoid high heeled shoes as they may puncture the inflatable slide that is often used in the case of emergencies. Flip-flops, sliders, and other sandals are also not advised as they can be problematic in an emergency and could cause you injury.
  2. White clothing: It’s not a safety risk, but wearing white clothes isn’t advised on a plane for cleanliness reasons. If you’re expecting to eat or drink on your flight, you could find yourself staining your clothes – especially if your plane hits some turbulence right when you take a sip of your coffee.
  3. Jumpsuits: Aeroplane toilets aren’t the most spacious of places, so trying to wrestle with a jumpsuit or playsuit could be a nightmare. Plus, you really don’t want your outfit dragging on the toilet floor.
  4. Metal jewellery and accessories: It’s a good idea to remove any jewellery and accessories that you can before you go through security. Some piercings may be unavoidable, but getting rid of any unnecessary metal will save time.
