New federal law affords scholarship grants for kids to make use of at personal schools — if their state’s governor opts to permit it.
We can’t recall Gov. Kathy Hochul or any of her predecessors ever turning down free, no-strings-attached cash — however giving the thumbs-up right here would risk the ire of New York’s highly effective lecturers unions.

Then, it lets the charities offer grants to help kids pay for private-school tuition, books or different instructional bills — as long because the state’s governor “or other entities/individuals designated by state law” opts in.
The support can certainly help New York kids to higher futures — by letting them escape low-performing public schools.
A whopping 40% of New York City kids in grades 3-8 failed this spring’s state assessments in math and English (although metropolis schools spend $37,000 a 12 months per pupil, whereas the average private-school tuition within the state is about $22,000).
That’s why 74% of New York college dad and mom back vouchers. And why tens of 1000’s of kids are on waitlists for seats at public constitution schools, that are privately run.
Alas, lecturers unions, which control public schools, concern shedding college students to schools they don’t control: It means fewer union members, diminished dues assortment — and ever-shrinking teacher-union energy.
So the unions hate the scholarship program, even pushing clear lies that’s one way or the other steals money away from public schools.

In reality, not one dime would come from New York public schools or any state tax income in any respect.
If Hochul turns down the cash, as schools knowledgeable Corey DeAngelis notes, she’ll be taking pictures New York within the foot: letting New York taxpayers’ donations go to help different states’ kids, whereas native kids get bupkis.
On each different entrance, Hochul is dedicated to maximizing federal grants to New York; together with virtually each elected Democrat within the state, she’s been furiously denouncing Medicaid “cuts” that primarily quantity to imposing work necessities on able-bodied beneficiaries.
If the gov blocks Empire State kids from getting these scholarships, it’ll be simple proof that unions matter to her more than New York’s kids.
