It means EV owners who take advantage and renew their road tax policy at the end of the month can secure another 12 months for free with fees not then payable until March 2026.

Paul Barker, editor of AutoExpress, said: “A foible of the system means owners can opt to reset their annual renewal date to this month, even if they’ve still got weeks or months of their existing car tax left to run.

“Doing so will mean skipping the £195 standard charge for up to a full year, because anyone taxing an EV that was first registered after 31 March 2017 will be liable to pay VED at the standard rate from April.”

Motorists can tax their vehicle online at GOV.UK in just a matter of minutes making the tip really easy to follow.

However, road users will need one of three documents to get an application started and processed. This includes either a recent vehicle tax reminder or ‘last chance’ warning letter from DVLA, a vehicle V5C log book or a green ‘new keeper’ slip. Motorists can also tax their vehicles by calling the DVLA directly or at a local Post Office branch.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has also urged individuals to take advantage of the EV tax loophole before it’s too late.

He said: “Now the crucial thing of this is, you can re-tax at any time, even if you only did it two months ago. You can do it again now. You have to pay each time, but it’s currently free so there’s nothing to pay.

“So effectively this is a loophole that says, just go and do your retaxing as near to that deadline as possible and you get an extra year for free.”
