US Steel shares tumble after Trump says he doesn’t – Business News

President Trump stated Wednesday he doesn’t need US Steel to go to Japan, suggesting he doesn’t help Nippon Steel’s bid for the American metal producer.

The remark appeared to contradict latest actions by the Trump administration.

On Monday, Trump directed a national security panel to take a recent take a look at Nippon Steel’s $14 billion bid for US Steel to help decide if “further action” is suitable, raising hopes the deal might gain an elusive inexperienced gentle.

Following Trump’s newest remark, shares of US Steel fell 13% in after-hours trading on Wednesday.

“We don’t want it to go to Japan or any other place, and we’re working with them,” Trump stated.

US Steel and Nippon Steel didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark.

Outgoing President Joe Biden had blocked the merger in January on national security grounds.
