Stand-in NASCAR Cup Series driver Anthony Alfredo has admitted it’s tough for him to get enthusiastic about operating at Phoenix Raceway this weekend in place of Alex Bowman, who will miss the race due to vertigo.
During final weekend’s DuraMAX Texas Grand Prix, which Tyler Reddick gained, Bowman struggled with sickness, leading to him being changed by Myatt Snider on Lap 71 of the motion in Austin. Due to Bowman feeling unwell, Hendrick Motorsports has opted to give Alfredo the No. 48 seat for this weekend’s race at Phoenix Raceway.
“Alex has worked very hard over the last several days,” Jeff Andrews, the president of Hendrick Motorsports, said in a statement. “We’re inspired by the progress he’s making, however we now have to prioritize his health above all else.
“It’s obviously frustrating for him because he’s a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We’ll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he’s medically cleared.”
Ahead of making a begin for Hendrick this weekend, Alfredo, who ran as a full-time Cup Series driver for Front Row Motorsports during the 2021 season, has admitted he is not getting too excited for the race in Phoenix.
“It’s one of those things that’s just weird right, I don’t want to see anyone in the position Alex is in so it’s hard for me to be excited,” stated Alfredo talking at a press convention.
“That makes it certainly disappointing because a lot of people are asking me how excited I am and I’m not excited that I have to fill in for someone who’s not able to be in their own car this weekend.”
However, Alfredo did admit that that is a weekend of alternative for him. He continued: “But, it is of course a huge opportunity for me to go out there and do a good job and maybe turn some heads, but I don’t even feel like I have to prove anything to anybody.
“Honestly, I do not assume they’d have picked me in the event that they did not assume I might do it proper, so it isn’t about that, I believe it is more going on the market and doing what’s requested of me and doing a good job behind the wheel filling in.”
Alfredo added about driving for Hendrick this weekend: “But yeah, it is definitely thrilling, a large second for me, I believe my profession’s been difficult so far as the contract facet of issues, working with them as a sim-driver has been a privilege and I take a lot of pleasure in what I do for them.
