However, drivers must be conscious that a black car absorbs more daylight, which makes the floor and inside hotter. Black paint absorbs up to 90% of daylight, which might make the cabin about 5C to 10C hotter, whereas additionally making the outside metallic floor significantly hotter than a white car. People took to Reddit to share their ideas, with one particular person asking if “black cars are really that much hotter in a hot climate?”

One particular person defined: “I’ve lived in Las Vegas long enough to only buy light colored cars with light colored interiors. My co-worker had the same model as me. My car is a pearl metallic white on a light grey… hers is black on black. On a 40C day her car got to 70C mine got to 68C after 1.5 hours. May not sound like a lot but it makes a difference. Mine cooled down quicker and needed less AC fan speed.”

Another stated: “I had a girlfriend with a white SUV with white interior, and it made a noticeable difference on a hot day compared to my black on black car.”

A Reddit consumer recommended that whereas black vehicles get hotter, “you can cancel that out with a ceramic tint”. Another one defined: “If you are worried about interior temperatures, getting a quality ceramic window tint on all windows (including the windshield) will make a much larger difference than just the paint color. Most tints will block the UV light that comes in and that’s what really makes you feel the heat.

“They also make very light tints that look clear if you don’t want a blacked-out tint. I got a 50% window tint all around on my car. I used to burn my hand on the steering wheel and seatbelt, but now they are still cool after sitting in the sun all day with the new window tint.”

Experts at Don Lee’s Tyres & Auto stated that the primary motive car colors affect heat buildup is because of how completely different colors take in or replicate daylight.

“Dark colours, like black and deep blue, absorb more of the sun’s radiation, including both visible light and infrared heat. Light colours, particularly white and silver, reflect a higher percentage of that energy.

“That means a black vehicle absorbs more heat than a white one under identical conditions. This isn’t just a theory—it’s something you can feel in the cabin, on the seats, and even on the steering wheel.”

They added: “Studies and real-world tests have shown that the interior temperature of a black car can be significantly higher than that of a white car when both are parked in the sun. While that difference might not sound huge, it’s noticeable the moment you climb in. Hotter interiors take longer to cool down and place more strain on your air conditioning system, which can affect fuel efficiency and comfort during the drive.”
