Motorsport fans did little to cover their frustration with Denny Hamlin after the 23XI Racing co-owner accused one reporter of writing a “propaganda piece” relating to the crew’s year-long legal battle with NASCAR.

On Monday, the continued lawsuit heads to trial, with the 2 sides set to satisfy in a Charlotte courthouse. Last October, 23XI — which was based in 2020 by Hamlin, NBA legend Michael Jordan and his business associate Curtis Polk — filed a joint antitrust lawsuit with Front Row Motorsports proprietor Bob Jenkins towards NASCAR and CEO Jim France in North Carolina’s federal court docket.

In the swimsuit, they alleged that NASCAR has “used anti-competitive practices to prevent fair competition in the sport,” moreover accusing the sanctioning physique of “unlawful monopolization of premier stock car racing in order to enrich themselves at the expense of the premier stock car racing teams.”

Ahead of the anticipated 10-day court docket proceedings, ESPN’s Ryan McGee offered background data on the bitter legal feud in an article titled: “23XI vs. NASCAR trial: Why Jordan wants to tear up stock car racing.” The piece outlines the present disagreement over Cup Series constitution agreements and the crew’s perception in how the stock car business ought to be operated.

Hamlin, for one, believed that the explainer was extremely biased in favor of the defendant. Taking to social media, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver slammed McGee for allegedly letting his article be swayed by NASCAR senior vice president of communications Mike Forde.

“Please give credit to @mforde for helping you write this propaganda piece that they want pushed to switch the narrative,” Hamlin wrote. “Continuous lies about our stance, NASCARs motives for its actions, and continued message from the sanctioning body that everything is fine. Our fans know better.”

In response to Hamlin’s criticism, McGee insisted that he tried his best to share either side of the story. “Tried to hit it down the middle, thus all the ‘(Fill in the blank) believes…’ and ‘(Fill in the blank) argues…’ Sorry you disagree, but thanks for reading. See you Monday,” he wrote.

Yet Hamlin was having none of it, clapping back: “Our fans have been brainwashed with their talking points for decades. Narratives pushed by media who are intimidated by them. Lies are over starting Monday morning. It’s time for the truth. It’s time for change.”

Hamlin’s feedback didn’t precisely sit effectively with fans, many of whom criticized the 45-year-old for taking his anger out on a reporter and his supporters. “All I see is facts and I’m rooting for Denny. Bad look Denny attacking Ryan,” one X person wrote, with one other including: “Maybe calling the fans brainwashed isn’t the best call. It’s fine to have different opinions. No need to belittle the people who buy the tickets and support the sport.”

Others swiftly rushed to the protection of Hamlin, insisting that he and 23XI had been standing up towards injustice prevalent all through the world of motorsports. “This isn’t just a fight for 23XI, it’s a fight for the fans who have seen this sport crumble before our eyes,” another person mentioned. “The NASCAR execs and their puppet media outlets may have dug themselves into a hole that they cannot climb out of without some serious repercussions. Go get them Denny.”

A fourth chimed in, “Denny hit the nail on the head. Bottom Line the suits have been collecting the checks for years doing nothing to grow the sport. Time for teams to get a bigger slice of the checks.”
