Despite being the world’s fourth-ranked tennis player and belonging to a family with a fortune exceeding $7 billion, Jessica Pegula revealed her down-to-earth nature at the 2024 U.S. Open.

Pegula, a prominent figure in American tennis with nearly $17 million in career earnings, certainly has the means for an opulent life, especially given her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula’s massive net worth of $7.6 billion, as estimated by Forbes.

The Pegulas are owners of the Buffalo Bills, having acquired the NFL team in 2014. Nevertheless, while participating in her local major as a New Yorker, Pegula chose to ride the subway instead of flying in her private jet or driving a high-end car.

She candidly expressed a preference for public transport over cars. When Pegula made it to the 2024 U.S. Open final, fans were amazed to spot her commuting on the New York subway en route to Flushing Meadows.

After footage of her subway journey spread online, Pegula took to Instagram to explain her transportation choice. “Why am I taking the metro? I don’t like taking a car and I like trains,” she declared.

“I do like taking the trains to go to a lot of baseball games. I went to a Yankees game the other day.”

Pegula also shared that she has experienced car sickness when traveling to the U.S. Open and her agent teases her about her reluctance to use a luxurious vehicle, recalling, “We actually went to Flushing [by car] one time.

DON’T MISS

“It took like an hour and a half in the car and I wanted to like throw up. I was ready to like jump out of the car and walk to the site. On the way back we took the subway.”

Pegula is recognized on the WTA Tour for her exceptional kindness and approachability, which has made her one of the tour’s most adored players. Coming off a win at the Austin Open on Sunday and clinching her seventh career title, Pegula traveled to Indian Wells, California, gearing up for the upcoming tournament.

McCartney Kessler, who faced defeat by Pegula in the singles final, also played in the doubles final with Zhang Shuai. However, the duo lost to Yuan Yue and Anna Blinkova, but the competitive spirit took a back seat post-match.

In an act of camaraderie, as Pegula readied for her private plane trip to California, she extended an invitation to the four finalists to join her on the flight. Yuan confirmed the generous offer through social media, exclaiming: “Praise Miss Pegula. Okay!!!

“She has invited all the players in today’s game (doubles final) to take a private plane together. Thank you so much!!! Otherwise, we would all have been on the road for at least nine hours tomorrow. Oh my God, how can there be such a beautiful lady?”

Zhang also expressed gratitude towards Pegula on social media, sharing the group’s discussion about the best route to Indian Wells: “The final day girls discuss how flight to IW, many different ways, someone leave from Austin/ Houston/ Dallas, someone might need to transfer at LA in the middle night because it’s tough to get a flight after the doubles final.

“In the meantime @jpegula offering everyone who playing at the Sunday final to join her private jet, you know she can leave away right after her singles final, but she is such a selfless and generous girl. This message is NOT to show I took the jet, just wanted to appreciate and transfer the love.”
