Andy explained: “Bulbs are an easy fix on most cars and can cost as little as 99p. For those not confident changing them themselves, this can be done cheaply with a fitting service like Halfords offers.

“Drivers should get into the habit of checking their headlights, side lights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, and fog lights by walking around the car with all the lights on – this will help ensure they don’t get caught out when their car goes for an MOT.

“And don’t forget number plate lights and reversing lights, which are easily overlooked but essential for passing a vehicle MOT.”

According to Halfords, March is the busiest month of the year for MOTs in the UK.

Analysis shows that MOT tests surge by 23% during the month meaning more road users than usual could be caught out by a simple broken bulb.

Halfords warns that as many as three in ten (28%) vehicles failed their test last year.

Motorists who do not meet the safety standards are not allowed to drive the vehicle on the road until repair work has been completed.

After any new parts are installed, the vehicle will then be re-tested by mechanics until it receives a pass certificate.

KwikFit has previously stressed: “Ensuring your vehicle’s lights are working correctly is critical for your own safety and also other road users as it allows you to be able to see and help others to see you.

“A blown bulb will also result in an MOT failure, so make sure you check your lights before taking your vehicle in for its annual MOT test.”
